Got an old TV or computer monitor gathering dust? You can now clear space at home while helping shape the future of e-waste recycling in Tasmania by dropping it off to the Brighton Waste Transfer Station for free!

Council’s e-waste partner, Resource Work Cooperative, is running a 12-month trial to learn more about how televisions and computer monitors can be recovered, reused and recycled. By dropping off your unwanted TV or monitor, you’ll contribute to a project that could improve how these items are managed across the state.

This is important because televisions and monitors are difficult to recycle as they are bulky and contain large amounts of hard-to-recycle plastics. In many cases, the cost and effort of processing them outweigh the value of the materials recovered, making them one of the more challenging forms of e-waste.

Over the next 12 months, the TVs and monitors collected will help build a clearer picture of what’s possible. The trial will track the types of items received, processing time, how much material can be recovered, and where those materials end up. This information will help determine whether TV recycling can become a practical long-term service, and guide future investment in Tasmania’s resource recovery systems.

Where possible, items in good condition will be assessed, safety tested and prepared for reuse, giving them a second life. Items that cannot be reused will be carefully dismantled so their materials can be recovered.
