East Derwent Little Athletics ready for the future

by Brighton Council

East Derwent Little Athletics Centre is preparing for another exciting season, with registrations now open for the 2026/27 season, and a strong focus on welcoming even more young athletes to the track and field. Following an outstanding 2025/26 season, the Centre is hoping to build on its recent success by exceeding last year’s registration numbers while continuing to provide a fun, inclusive and supportive environment where children can develop their athletic skills, confidence and love of sport.

Last season was one of the Centre’s most successful yet, with strong registration numbers, several new club records set, impressive representation at the State Championships, and the achievement of key fundraising goals. Thanks to the generosity and support of members and the wider community, the Centre has purchased a brand-new discus cage, which athletes will enjoy using throughout the upcoming season.

Among the Centre’s recent achievements was Under 12 athlete Thea, who proudly represented East Derwent at the Australian Junior Cross Country Championships in Ballarat in August, showcasing the opportunities available to dedicated young athletes.

Little Athletics provides children with the chance to stay active, make new friends and learn fundamental athletic skills across a wide range of track and field events. The program focuses on participation, personal improvement and having fun, creating a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere for athletes of all abilities.

Families interested in giving Little Athletics a try are encouraged to attend two free “Come and Try” sessions before registering. Weekly meets are held on Saturday mornings at Weily Park, and the Centre is eager to welcome new families to the club. The first meet is scheduled for Saturday 3 October, followed by Saturday 10 October.

East Derwent Little Athletics Centre is also seeking a volunteer photographer to attend one or two meets during the season to help capture the excitement and achievements of its young athletes.
