Brighton Council has been awarded $25,000 through the Tasmanian Government’s Urban Greening Grants program to support a new project that will help cool one of Brighton’s highest residential heat-risk areas.

The project, Tackling Urban Heat in Brighton, will deliver 100 climate-resilient Australian native street trees on Council land between November 2026 and October 2027. Planting will focus on locations in the suburb of Brighton where new shade can provide the greatest benefit for nearby homes and help improve comfort during hot weather.

Community engagement will be an important part of the project, with residents invited to learn more about local heat risk, the benefits of street trees, and ways to increase greening on private property.

The grant supports Council’s Greening Brighton Strategy and its municipality-wide goal of increasing canopy cover by one per cent each year toward 25 per cent by 2033.
