National orienteering selection for Callum
BRIGHTON’S Callum Fagg has been selected as a member of the Australian Junior Orienteering team. Callum is currently in Europe training for the event. The team will be competing at the Junior World Championships in Trento in Italy from July 5 to 12. Callum was selected for the national team from a series of outstanding results at the 2009 Australian Easter Orienteering Championships. Callum is one of three Tasmanians of the 12-member team (six boys and six girls).

Luke wins Chairman’s cricket award
BRIGHTON’s favourite cricketing son, PKF Tasmanian Tiger Like Butterworth was awarded the prestigious Chairman’s award for his all-round performance during the past cricket season.
Luke was presented with his award by Tasmanian Cricket Association chairman Tony Harrison at the team’s end-of-season dinner in Hobart.

Brighton brothers on track for success
Brothers Josh and Michael Mason are two talented young men from the Brighton community who look set to go far. Both excel in athletics and are valued members of Claremont College.
Assistant principal of Claremont College, John Dalco said he believed both boys had a bright future. “At high school Michael was the school track champion, and Josh was the field champion and runner up track champion,” Mr Dalco said.

Ethan savours rewards of great season all round
FOURTEEN-year-old local junior Ethan Engels, playing his first season with the Old Beach Cricket Club (OBCC) in the Kookaburra Southern Cricket Association, was given the prestigious honour of young cricketer of the year for the 2008/09 season. His season included such great individual efforts as 102 not out and 6/47 (including a hat-trick) against Rokeby in the fourth division. An athletic effort for Brighton Primary
APRIL was a fantastic month for Brighton Primary School with the school’s athletes performing brilliantly at the recent southern primary athletics carnivals.
The A team of 65 students competed against seven other southern schools and put in a fantastic late effort to win the carnival from Lauderdale and Howrah Primary Schools. Cricket raises money for bushfire appeal

BRIGHTON Council hosted a Twenty/20 Cricket Bushfire appeal game at Pontville Park in March under lights.

More than 500 people raised over $1400 to see local celebrities such as Mayor Tony Foster, Heath Macpherson and the talented Betty Stapenell lose by one run to the TCA

Brighton gets active with government grant
BRIGHTON Council has received a grant of almost $35,000 from the State Government to deliver its Active Brighton! program across the municipality.
Labor MLC for Derwent, Michael Aird said Active Brighton! was addressing barriers to participation as outlined in the Brighton Council’s 2005 community survey.

Mr Aird visited a group of young people involved an Active Brighton! program in conjunction with the Tassie Tigers Cricket team.
Brighton Street Cricket was held in Seymour Street among a crowd of enthusiastic young people, including members of the Tassie Tigers team.
“The Brighton area has produced some very good local and State cricketers over the years,” Mr Aird said.
“Luke Butterworth, a former student of Bridgewater High School, is a fine example of that talent.

Yogi’s boxing classes are for all skill levels
YOGI’S Boxing Classes have begun at the Poultry Shed Pavilion (new shed just past the Pontville cricket and footy ovals). The classes train four nights a week (Mondays to Thursdays), from 6pm – 7.30pm with children from 10 years old and upwards invited to join. Younger children (10-16) can attend earlier classes on these days from 5-6pm.
