The much-anticipated Brighton High School was officially opened on 7 April, after welcoming its first intake of Years 7 and 11 students earlier in the year. Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the new school will be able to cater for up to 600 students in Years 7 to 12 when operating at full capacity.

Tasmanian Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said it was an honour to officially open the school. “The facility has been shaped by extensive consultation with students, educators and the community, and I’m excited to see the school community continue to flourish in the years to come,” she said.

The school’s gymnasium has been named in memory of the late Mr Tony Foster AM OAM, the former Mayor of Brighton who strongly advocated for a new high school for Brighton.

The opening ceremony speeches were followed by a performance by the school band and light refreshments.
