Toll move provides tremendous boost for Brighton

Acting Mayor

NEWS that the Toll Group, Australia’s largest freight mover, has lodged a development application to build its major warehouse and associated facilities ay Brighton has provided a tremendous boost for the Transport Hub and our municipality.

Toll will become the anchor tenant for the Brighton Transport Hub and will move its entire operations from Macquarie Point in Hobart to the new facility. It will bring vital jobs and economic activity to Brighton and importantly, will establish Brighton as the key centre of transport and freight movement for southern Tasmania.

The importance of the Toll project and the Transport Hub itself cannot be over-estimated. Toll’s development application, that will be considered by Council in the next few weeks, provides a clear signal that Brighton is moving ahead with confidence. The investment is significant – tens of millions of dollars and Toll alone will bring 125 additional jobs to Brighton. And this is just the beginning. Other businesses will follow. They will buy goods and services in our region and support the local businesses that already exist here.

Toll has already negotiated a long-term lease with TasRail and this will see more freight moving between the north and south of the State via rail, lessening the movement of heavy trucks on the Midland Highway. Toll plans to build a warehouse, stores, offices and all the associated facilities necessary for its business. The project has been designed to incorporate the latest innovations and the environmental enhancements, parking, landscaping and other features will ensure that it is a development of which Brighton can be proud.

All this economic activity will in turn generate more employment opportunities for the people of our municipality and increased rate revenue that in turn can be used by Council to maintain and improve services throughout Brighton.

With the Brighton Transport Hub, initiatives to flow from the completion of the Brighton Bypass, our ever-expanding industrial estate and the major housing development being undertaken by the Brighton Industrial and Housing Corporation, Brighton is certainly progressing.

Council is committed to providing the highest standards of service for our community and creating exciting opportunities for the people who live here. At the same time, we are proud that we have the most efficient Council administration and operations and the fairest and lowest rates’ regime in Tasmania. It is through the promotion of the important developments I have outlined that we have been able to achieve this and clearly position Brighton as a great place to live, work and enjoy.

Council has many exciting initiatives in train and these will be developed and announced over the coming months. In the meantime, we can look forward to Council’s deliberations on the Toll development application and subject to the approval of this, and early start on the multi-million dollar project.
