Signings boost for healthcare

RESIDENTS of Brighton and Bridgewater will have better access to GPs and allied health professionals with the signing of agreements to establish and upgrade medical clinics in the region.

Both Dick Adams, the Federal Member for Lyons and the Minister for Health, Tanya Plibersek welcomed the recent signing of a $935,000 funding agreement with the Brighton Council for Brighton and a $440,000 funding agreement with the Independent Practitioner Network Pty Ltd as a boost to health care in Bridgewater.Mr Adams said he had been fighting a long time to get these services.

“I know these negotiations take a considerable amount of effort, but I am really pleased for the people of Brighton that this has finally allowed new services to be offered in Brighton after the loss of the previous doctor,” he said.

Minister Plibersek recently visited the site of the potential clinic and saw the need first hand.

“Brighton does not at present have a medical clinic providing GP services, so people have to drive up 25 kilometres to receive treatment. Establishing a new medical centre in Brighton will improve access to health services to the people in the region,” Ms Plibersek said.

Brighton Council will establish a clinic to provide services from general practitioners, nurses, and allied health professionals. The clinic will also have a strong emphasis on education for medical, nursing and allied health students.

Mr Adams and Ms Plibersek also were both lobbied to increase the service at Bridgewater as well.

“At Bridgewater, upgrading the Green Point Medical Services Clinic will allow the practice to open its books to new patients and provide additional GP services, including after hours,” Ms Plibersek said.

“This will take pressure off the hospitals and allow new and innovative services to be offered, particularly now that the NBN is moving quickly in Tasmania and will allow online medical assistance shortly,” Mr Adams said.

The Independent Practitioner Network Pty Ltd, operating as the Green Point Medical Services Clinic at Bridgewater, will expand within the existing practice building and provide additional space for GPs, nurses, allied health and pathology services.
