Little Athletics Centre marks 30 years

THE East Derwent Little Athletics Centre welcomed its milestone birthday in style recently, when it celebrated its 30th year with a huge party at Weily Park in Bridgewater.

Young children who attended were treated to an assortment of fun and novelty events including fun with balloons and bubbles, along with the regular track and field events that took place on the day. The celebratory activities culminated with the cutting of an enormous birthday cake.

President of the East Derwent Little Athletics Kendra Hey said the Centre was abuzz with excitement on the day.

“In fact, there has been a really positive vibe around the Centre this entire season,” Kendra said.

“Our two new mascots have been a great addition to our family and we have had some truly wonderful parents and children involved at the Centre this year.

“We have also been privileged to have a large number of ex-athletes and their parents returning to lend a hand. They obviously enjoy being here and we are always pleased to see them return.”

The Centre also enjoyed success in the week leading up to its birthday, when it was named the winner of the Life Members Shield at the Southern Centre Challenge at the Domain Athletics Track.

Even the very trying weather conditions did not prevent the East Derwent athletes from turning out in large numbers on the day to represent their school in four individual events, and earning valuable points for their teams.

More than 200 children are currently registered with the East Derwent Centre, varying in age from 14 years to as young as three. While they are lucky to have some extremely talented individuals involved with the Centre, the focus remains on participation and personal involvement.

Little Athletics is a fun activity for children of all abilities to take part in and can involve all members of the family.

To continue the celebration theme throughout the 2011-12 season, the Centre has planned a disco and dinner for February 2012. Any former athletes and/or parents are asked to contact the Centre if they are interested in coming along to these events.
