THE East Derwent Primary School Kitchen Garden Program continues to teach students the valuable life skills of growing and harvesting fresh fruit and vegetables to prepare nutritious meals. Twice a week, grades three and four students learn new skills in the garden and kitchen and then sit down together at our dining table for a meal.

The Kitchen Garden Program recently received a welcome boost with a pallet of coir from Tasmanian Botanics.

This will be used as part of our composting and seed raising programs.

In addition, we also have a student group that is investigating ways to make our school more environmentally sustainable. They have distributed compost caddies to six classrooms and together with recycling paper towel, we are increasing our composting knowledge and capacity.

Tasmanian Botanics is a relatively new local business with a strong cultivation background and a focus on local employment.

MONA’s 24 Carrot Gardens support our Kitchen Garden with seedlings and working blitzes. It is based at the Botanical Institute near the new playground on the River Derwent.

Tasmanian Botanics is in the former detention centre at Pontville. You can’t miss the huge greenhouses. It is a privately owned business employing many locals and is building the second greenhouse.

We want to thank Tasmanian Botanics for its support of our students and school in general.
