Ethan savours rewards of great season all round

FOURTEEN-year-old local junior Ethan Engels, playing his first season with the Old Beach Cricket Club (OBCC) in the   Kookaburra Southern Cricket Association, was given the prestigious honour of young cricketer of the year for the 2008/09 season. His season included such great individual efforts as 102 not out and 6/47 (including a hat-trick) against Rokeby in the fourth division.

Playing alongside his two brothers Luke and Kurt and his father Paul, Ethan also picked up the awards of best first year player, most wickets, bowling average and most runs in the club’s fourth division at the OBCC annual awards day in late April.

This season was the first time since it’s inception in 1899 that Old Beach Cricket Club has fielded three teams, and this can be attributed to the growth in the community and the junior development policy at the club.

The club had mixed results this season with fourth division finishing sixth in its first year, first division finishing fifth and bowing out after their second final was washed out and our third division played off in the grand final only to be narrowly defeated in a close and tense encounter.

The club is looking to grow in the future and with a strong committee, community and Council support and upgrading of the Cloak Oval facilities, as well as the possibility of expanding further to four teams in the 2009/10 season.

Pre-season training for the coming 2009/10 roster will begin in August under coach Brian Davison. Anyone interested in being part of the Club in the up-coming season can contact Club secretary Davin Wooldridge on 0417110937 or email:
