Construction starts on Pontville detention centre

CONSTRUCTION work has begun at the site to be used for the Pontville Immigration Detention Centre (IDC), following the appointment of Tasmanian company Fairbrother as head contractor.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) had previously appointed Hobart architects Bush Parkes Shugg & Moon to design and manage the project. Tenders for some of the construction work have still to be decided. At this stage, it is anticipated it will take about six to eight weeks for work on the first stage of the centre to be complete, depending on availability of tradespeople, suitable buildings and securing any necessary approvals. Occupation of the site by the first group of clients will commence shortly afterwards. It is still expected that the centre will accommodate up to 400 single adult men.

The department recognises that part of the site within the boundary of the Pontville IDC contains sensitive flora and has no desire to harm its heritage or environmental values. Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania has assessed the development as ‘low risk’ and advised it has no objection to work proceeding on the site. The department has environment and heritage management plans in place.

Now that construction has begun, the department is moving towards establishing a community consultative group to provide a forum for liaison between the department, local and state government and members of the community to identify and address any community concerns. Membership of the group has still to be determined.

Stakeholder briefings are occurring and will continue on a regular basis.

The department has also developed information in response to questions about the establishment and operation of the facility. This information, called Pontville Immigration Detention Centre – Frequently Asked Questions, can be found at the department’s website. The website address is:
