Learning centre receives major funding for new fit out

 

A BRIDGEWATER early learning centre development fitout has been given the go ahead with funding from a Federal Government initiative to create jobs and investment.

Waterbridge pantry stocked with foodies’ delights

Students play active role in school-based apprenticeship program

THE Jordan River Learning Federation is supporting the Australian School based apprentice (ASbA) program with four students currently in the program.

An Australian School-based Apprenticeship is a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship, usually one or two days a week, combining an apprenticeship or traineeship with school.  An Australian School-based Apprenticeship arrangement combines paid employment as an apprentice or a trainee, off-the-job vocational training and secondary school studies.

Fast Foodies success is in the little things

THE success of the Waterbridge Food Co-op isn’t measured by sales or how much food we Fast Foodies make.  It’s measured by how we are received, how people love our products and how they keep coming back.  It’s measured by how we are improving people’s health through healthy food, how Fast Foodie participants are learning speedy skills while making that food, and how the little things that our community is doing are helping in a big way. Long-time ‘Blitzers’ recognised for their work

FOUR of our long-term participants were recognised at a small celebration ceremony at the Bridgewater LINC recently.  The ceremony was also attended by members of Community Blitz Governance Group and Mayor Tony Foster who presented certificates to the four who had given more than 200 hours with the other two working in excess of 100 hours on the full range of community projects.  Glenn Randall said he had really enjoyed working with the Blitz team, meeting new people and putting his learned skills into the community projects.   Glenn has worked for more than 120 hours with Blitz and said that he was putting back into this community for the first time ever.  He is more fulfilled now that he is reconnecting with the community.  Recently Glenn completed his work experience commitment with MAX Employment and now volunteers with Community Blitz two days a week.

Seasonal vegetables make fabulous frittata

WELL here I am with my second article for the Brighton Community News! This month the Waterbridge Fast Foodies are underway with our second lot of cooking classes at the Gagebrook Community Centre (first Wednesday of the month) and at the Brighton Civic Centre (second, third and fourth Wednesdays of the month). In our first 10-week cooking program, which ran from April to June,  we cooked more than 650 meals which have been sold through to the Waterbridge Community Pantry or given to community food programs. We have also made more than 450 jars of jams and chutneys which have ranged from apricot to feijoa! I can’t thank the Fast Foodies cooks enough for all of their amazing cooking – you are just awesome!

This month we have been using the best of the winter’s seasonal vegetables making broccoli and cauliflower frittatas. These yummy little veggie bundles are good hot or cold and are great in lunchboxes. You can also add other veggies from the fridge to really pack those vegetables in.

Happy cooking!

Broccoli and Cauliflower Frittatas (makes 8)

Ingredients:

Cooking oil spray

500g of broccoli and cauliflower mix, chopped

4 eggs

2 ½ cups milk

1 ½ cups tasty cheese, grated

100g of shaved ham, chopped

4 spring onions, chopped

 

Recipe:

  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Lightly spray eight pie pans or a muffin tin with cooking oil spray and place on an oven tray.
  • Arrange vegetables in the base of the pans.
  • Whisk eggs with milk, add grated cheese, ham and chopped spring onions.
  • Carefully pour mixture over the vegetables.
  • Bake for 30 minutes until set and golden in colour.
  • Serve hot or cold with salad or more vegetables.

The Waterbridge Community Pantry at Gagebrook Community Centre sells broccoli and cauliflower along with a range of fruit and vegetables. Come in and have a look.

I am super excited because I get to share the recipes and stories from the Waterbridge Food Co-Op Fast Foodies cooking group. Waterbridge Food Co-Op is a really important project which aims to improve access to healthy and nutritious food in the Bridgewater and Gagebrook area.  The Waterbridge Food Co-Op project is funded by Tasmanian Medicare Local and the Fast Foodies cooking group is funded through a grant from Feeding the Future. Former Speaker gives insight into workings of parliament

SCHOOL for Seniors members enjoyed a visit to Redlands Estate just a few minutes drive from New Norfolk in the Derwent Valley. Those who toured the distillery were informed on the required processes to produce a good drop of whisky and were impressed by the enthusiasm of the chief distiller who explained how the barley is treated through to the final product.
