Former Speaker gives insight into workings of parliament

By SHIRLEY McKERROW

SCHOOL for Seniors members enjoyed a visit to Redlands Estate just a few minutes drive from New Norfolk in the Derwent Valley. Those who toured the distillery were informed on the required processes to produce a good drop of whisky and were impressed by the enthusiasm of the chief distiller who explained how the barley is treated through to the final product. They also enjoyed sampling the different tastes of various brews. We were all treated to a personal tour of the gardens and learned about the restoration of the grounds and various historical buildings on the property. Some lucky members even took home a gardenia flower from the oldest gardenia tree in the southern hemisphere.

At one meeting we learned about the detection and prevention of different cancers and how early detection is the best way to achieve a satisfactory outcome.

Former longest serving Speaker of the House of Assembly Michael Polley, who recently retired, was an engaging speaker reminiscing about how times have changed since he was appointed to the important position as Speaker of the House. Members had lots of questions for him which he was most gracious in answering.

By the time this paper is published we will have visited Runnymede, an historical House in New Town, to “Take Tea with Harriott” a performance depicting the story of a convict woman’s life and experiences in Tasmania.

Before the school holidays are upon us we will have had a visit from staff from Aspire and a general discussion about living with mental illness.

Then a very welcome return visit from one of our regular speakers who will talk about ‘Islands as a Destination’.
