COMMUNITY Blitz’s first community-based activities began on March 15 when members of the Mates Are Great team, from the Jordan River Learning Federation Gagebrook Primary campus, formalised their partnership with the Community Blitz initiative.
Community Blitz is a community-based enterprise that seeks to support positive change made by the community for the community.
Community Blitz provides people within the Brighton municipality with access to meaningful real-life learning opportunities and strengthens community connectedness through engagement in activities that result in the maintenance and beautification of private, public and environmental spaces.
Mates Are Great is a program that seeks to engage dads in school life as they work on practical projects such as gardening and property maintenance.
Dads work alongside students and take a hands-on approach to assisting their children, at the same time achieving positive practical outcomes for the Gagebrook Primary campus.
Fiona Forsyth, early years leader, supports the men as they identify potential projects.
Through partnership with Community Blitz the members of Mates Are Great have nominated additional activities that will contribute to beneficial outcomes for the broader Gagebrook community.
Community Blitz is soon to launch its second practical partnership in association with the Jordan River Learning Federation middle and senior school campuses.
With guidance and support from teacher Ken Clarke, the students will undertake the reestablishment of the community garden at the PCYC.
The food grown will then be used by the PCYC in its after-school activities so young people will be able to grow the food, harvest the food, then cook and share the food with family and friends.
Community Blitz is an initiative of Brighton Alive and funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund.
